Accessible Citations

Citations borrowed from the page of Publications and Presentations by CWIT Staff Members.

Our Recommendations

  • Have the citations in an unordered bulleted list element (ul), not a numbered list or as separate paragraphs
  • The title of the work should be the first thing in each citation. On a page like this, which lists out a person or group’s academic output, the title is the most important part of the citation. Putting it first allows screen-reader users to immediately get the content they care about. Please note that this doesn’t conform to MLA, APA, or Chicago style, which all list Authors first.
  • If the work has a link (for example a DOI), place that link at the beginning of the citation over the title of the work. Do not include a raw URL anywhere in the citation as a screen reader will attempt to read it out loud to a user.
  • For very long lists of citations, try to break it up by categorizing the citations under different headings, either by year/decade or subject, to allow users to skip to the content they are searching for should they be seeking something specific.
